Space Density of Optically-Selected Type 2 Quasars

چکیده
Type 2 quasars are luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) whose central regions are obscured by large amounts of gas and dust. In this paper, we present a catalog of type 2 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), selected based on their optical emission lines. The catalog contains 887 objects with redshifts z < 0.83; this is six times larger than the previous version and is by far the largest sample of type 2 quasars in the literature. We derive the [OIII]5008 luminosity function for 10L⊙ < L[OIII] < 10 L⊙ (corresponding to intrinsic luminosities up to M [2400Å] ≃ −28 mag or bolometric luminosities up to 4 × 10 erg/sec). This luminosity function provides strong lower limits to the actual space density of obscured quasars, due to our selection criteria, the details of the spectroscopic target selection, as well as other effects. We derive the equivalent luminosity function for the complete sample of type 1 (unobscured) quasars; then, we determine the ratio of type 2/type 1 quasar number densities. Our best data constrain this ratio to be at least ∼ 1.5 : 1 for 10L⊙ < L[OIII] < 10L⊙ at z < 0.3, and at least ∼ 1.2 : 1 for L[OIII] ∼ 10L⊙ at 0.3 < z < 0.83. Type 2 quasars are at least as abundant as type 1 quasars in the relatively nearby Universe (z . 0.8) for the highest luminosities. Decline of the space density of quasars between z = 2 and z = 4
We define a new complete sample of 13 optically-luminous radio quasars (MAB(1450Å)< −26. 9 and log P1.4GHz(WHz−1) > 25.7) with redshift 3.8 < z < 4.5, obtained by crosscorrelating the FIRST radio survey and the APM catalogue of POSS-I. We measure the space density to be (1.0 ± 0.3) Gpc−3, a factor 1.9±0.7 smaller than the space density of similar quasars at z ≈ 2 (FBQS). Using a new measurement...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Radio-Loud Quasars at High Redshift
We present results from two surveys for radio-loud quasars. These are (1) a northern survey reaching S 5GHz = 0:2Jy and (2) the Parkes QSO survey reaching S 2:7GHz = 0:25Jy which together cover most of the sky. Both surveys use digitised plate material to identify the majority of the radio sources and CCD images to identify the optically fainter sources. The northern survey was targeted speciic...
متن کاملPowerful obscured AGN among X-ray hard, optically-dim serendipitous Chandra sources
We present a small sample of ̧X-ray sources selected from the fields of ACIS observations which probe fluxes around the break in the hard band source counts. The targets of these fields include 9 nearby galaxy clusters, 1 distant cluster and 2 powerful radio galaxy fields. The follow-up of this serendipitous sample was biased towards X-ray hard and optically-dim sources mostly not seen on the D...
متن کاملThe Redshift Cutoff and the Quasar Epoch
We have obtained complete redshift information for a sample of 442 radio-loud quasars with flux densities S 11 ≥ 0.25 Jy. These come from a completely-identified sample of 878 flat-spectrum radio sources, so there is no optical magnitude limit. With these quasars, therefore, we can map out the entire quasar epoch, unhindered by optical selection effects and any intervening dust. The rapid decli...
متن کاملCo-moving Space Density of X-ray-selected Active Galactic Nuclei
For measurement of the AGN luminosity function and its evolution, X-ray selection samples all types of AGN and provides reduced obscuration bias in comparison with UV-excess or optical surveys. The apparent decline in optically-selected quasars above z ∼ 3 may be strongly affected by such a bias. The Chandra Multi–wavelength Project (ChaMP) is characterizing serendipitously detected X-ray sourc...
